2017 NFL Draft – Live Analysis

Hello sports fans. Make sure to bookmark this page, as I will give my analysis on each 2017 NFL Draft first round pick as it unfolds.

Also, I will be updating depth charts as players are drafted. You can view those here.

2017 NFL Off Season Hub

1. Cleveland Browns
Predicted Pick: DE Myles Garrett, Texas A&M
Actual Pick: DE Myles Garrett, Texas A&M

The only pick that made sense. Cleveland could not afford to pass up on him for a quarterback. With a ton of later picks they can try to draft the quarterback of the future.

2. Chicago Bears (from 49ers)
Predicted Pick: QB Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina
Actual Pick: QB Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina

The Bears gave up a lot but feel that Trubisky gives them the best chance to win long term. Hopefully he can sit for a year behind Mike Glennon and not get thrown into the fire.

3. San Francisco 49ers (from Bears)
Predicted Pick: EDGE Solomon Thomas, Stanford
Actual Pick: EDGE Solomon Thomas, Stanford

49ers fans might not like three straight defensive lineman drafted in the first round, but Thomas fits the new 4-3 that San Francisco is going to run. With Thomas, Aaron Lynch, DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead, the defensive line should be the strength of the team.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars
Predicted Pick: HB Leonard Fournette, LSU
Actual Pick: HB Leonard Fournette, LSU

I love the pick. The Jaguars could give Bortles one more year, and having an actual running threat for the first time in his career could only help.

5. Tennessee Titans
Predicted Pick: SS Jamal Adams, LSU
Actual Pick: WR Corey Davis, Western Michigan

Wow, this was a surprise. However, I had Corey Davis in the top ten of my mock before an injury knocked him out of the pre draft process. Still, the Titans have two first round picks and Davis projects as a number one receiver, something the Titans really needed.

6. New York Jets
Predicted Pick: SS Jamal Adams, LSU
Actual Pick: SS Jamal Adams, LSU

The Jets secondary is in worse position than quarterback, so New York did well to land the best secondary talent in the class. Adams will not win games for the Jets, but is a very safe bet to have a solid career.

7. San Diego Chargers
Predicted Pick: DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama
Actual Pick: WR Mike Williams, Clemson

This is another pick I have had at some point in my mock draft process. Mike Williams is the type of big, strong target Philip Rivers likes. He has some Vincent Jackson in him. This might have been a bit of a reach, especially with Malik Hooker and Jonathan Allen on the clock.

8. Carolina Panthers
Predicted Pick: HB Christian McCaffrey, Stanford
Actual Pick: HB Christian McCaffrey, Stanford

The worst kept secret in the draft. The Panthers were going to take a running back. McCaffrey reminds me of what Reggie Bush should have been coming out of USC. It will be up to the coaching staff to get the best out of him and not turn him into the next CJ Spiller.

9. Cincinnati Bengals
Predicted Pick: OLB Haason Reddick, Temple
Actual Pick: WR John Ross, Washington

Who would have thought there would be three receivers in the first nine picks? This is why I did not bother doing a final mock draft today. There are so many question marks with virtually every first round prospect. Ross is the deep threat that the Bengals desperately needed last year. Injuries are a big issue though.

10. Kansas City Chiefs (from Bills)
Predicted Pick: QB Patrick Mahomes II, Texas Tech
Actual Pick: QB Patrick Mahomes II, Texas Tech

Love the trade up for the Chiefs. Trading a first round pick next year, when they will probably be a playoff team, to move up almost 20 spots to draft a quarterback (which they had to) was a smart move. He has a lot to learn, but gets to learn from Andy Reid and hopefully sit behind Alex Smith for a year.

11. New Orleans Saints
Predicted Pick: CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State
Actual Pick: CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State

No one is happier that all of the quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs got drafted than the Saints. New Orleans needs defensive help in the worst way, and Lattimore is a great first step. He has CB1 potential.

12. Houston Texans (from Browns)
Predicted Pick: QB Deshaun Watson, Clemson
Actual Pick: QB Deshaun Watson, Clemson

I know the analytics do not like him, but Deshaun Watson is my favorite quarterback in this class. Houston absolutely had to come out of this draft with a quarterback. Playing for Bill O’Brien will be a challenge, however.

13. Arizona Cardinals
Predicted Pick: TE OJ Howard, Alabama
Actual Pick: OLB Haason Reddick, Temple

I think Temple will be a top five player out of this draft. He fits exactly what the Cardinals need on defense. He can play either inside or outside linebacker in the 3-4, but will likely fit on the inside. He can also rush the passer. Great pick.

14. Philadelphia Eagles
Predicted Pick: FS Malik Hooker, Ohio State
Actual Pick: DE Derek Barnett, Tennessee

There are some great defensive prospects available at this point in the draft. Barnett’s lack of elite athleticism scares some scouts off, but he is the best player available here.

15. Indianapolis Colts
Predicted Pick: MLB Reuben Foster, Alabama
Actual Pick: FS Malik Hooker, Ohio State

The Colts could not have messed this one up. Not with so much defensive talent available. Indianapolis has issues at every position, and with Mailk Hooker, they get a quarterback of the secondary. Something the Colts really needed.

16. Baltimore Ravens
Predicted Pick: DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama
Actual Pick: CB Marlon Humphrey, Alabama

You knew Ozzie Newsome would take an Alabama player. With Allen, Humphrey, Howard and Foster available. Humphrey has some issues, but he has the body type and talent to become a fixture in the secondary. I think Allen or Foster would have filled much bigger needs and are better players.

17. Washington Redskins
Predicted Pick: DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama
Actual Pick: DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama

Allen’s slide stops here. Fit wise, it’s nearly perfect. The Redskins were a mess against the run last year, and Allen is a plus run defender. He is big enough to hold his own at 3-4 end, and can rush the passer as well. If his shoulders can hold up, this is the steal of the draft.

18. Tennessee Titans
Predicted Pick: CB Kevin King, Washington
Actual Pick: CB Adoree’ Jackson, USC

The Titans were going to target a receiver and cornerback in the first round, and they got one of each. Jackson is a big time project, but he has the talent to be a CB2. Until he is ready to step in, he will already be a top notch returner.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Predicted Pick: HB Dalvin Cook, Florida State
Actual Pick: TE OJ Howard, Alabama

I had mocked David Njoku to the Buccaneers on several occasions. Howard is a fantastic pick. He is the best overall tight end to come into the draft in many years. With so many receiving options, Jameis Winston is set up to succeed.

20. Denver Broncos
Predicted Pick: OT Garett Bolles, Utah
Actual Pick: OT Garett Bolles, Utah

There was little chance Denver was not going to draft an offensive line. Bolles might be limited to the right side, but he is mature and experienced and ready to step in and start right away. He may be forced into the left side in Denver, and he could struggle.

21. Detroit Lions
Predicted Pick: DE Taco Charlton, Michigan
Actual Pick: MLB Jarrad Davis, Florida

I do not like Davis over Foster at all, but character is obviously the deciding factor in this pick. Davis is a good player, but as a Dolphins fan, I am a bit relieved he was taken here. I do not see him as a difference maker.

22. Miami Dolphins
Predicted Pick: DE Taco Charlton, Michigan
Actual Pick: DE Charles Harris, Missouri

The Dolphins were going to take a defensive end here, and they chose the upside of Charles Harris over the low ceiling of Taco Charlton. The need is apparent. Harris will be groomed to take over for Cameron Wake.

23. New York Giants
Predicted Pick: OT Ryan Ramczyk, Wisconsin
Actual Pick: TE Evan Engram, Ole’ Miss

The Giants love to draft skill players early. I think they should have drafted offensive line, but none of those guys are sure things. Engram over David Njoku? I am super confused by that. I do not like the pick.

24. Oakland Raiders
Predicted Pick: MLB Reuben Foster, Alabama
Actual Pick: CB Gareon Conley, Ohio State

Assuming the rape accusation is false, I am very happy that Conley is still a first round pick. It is unfair that people keep trying to ruin these kids lives before the biggest day of their lives. On the field, this is an absolute steal. I liked Conley as the best corner in the draft.

25. Cleveland Browns (from Texans)
Predicted Pick: TE David Njoku, Miami
Actual Pick: SS Jabrill Peppers, Michigan

I had no idea what direction the Browns were going to go. Peppers probably should have gone in the second round, since he does not have a position. I expect him to eventually settle in as a weakside linebacker like a Mark Barron. Good, but not great pick.

26. Atlanta Falcons (from Seahawks)
Predicted Pick: OG Forrest Lamp, Western Kentucky
Actual Pick: EDGE Takkarist McKinley, UCLA

I thought it would be Forrest Lamp, but a pass rusher is a much bigger need. Vic Beasley was great at getting after the quarterback, but they need more bodies. McKinley might be nothing more than a situational guy, but the defensive line is getting deeper.

27. Buffalo Bills
Predicted Pick: TE David Njoku, Miami
Actual Pick: CB Tre’Davaious White, LSU

The Bills always let free agents walk and replace them with draft picks. That will happen again with White taking over for Stephon Gilmore. White will likely top out as a CB2 or slot corner. Buffalo passed on Marshon Lattimore and better hope the Chiefs (likely 20’s) pick will be worth it.

28. Dallas Cowboys
Predicted Pick: EDGE TJ Watt, Wisconsin
Actual Pick: DE Taco Charlton, Michigan

The Cowboys simply needed pass rushers, and Taco Charlton is a safe bet to become a solid professional. He lacks the upside of a TJ Watt, but Dallas needed a player who they can count on.

29. Cleveland Browns (from Packers)
Predicted Pick: QB Davis Webb, California
Actual Pick: TE David Njoku, Miami

I am very surprised by the pick but I love it. It seems that the Browns are going to try to sign a Garoppolo or Cousins next off season. Cleveland has used three picks to really build up the rest of the roster before adding a quarterback. Davis Webb will not be a good quarterback.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers
Predicted Pick: EDGE TJ Watt, Wisconsin
Actual Pick: EDGE TJ Watt, Wisconsin

Hey look, I got a pick right! The Steelers obviously need to find young pass rushers. Watt is getting drafted this high because of bloodlines, but he had a great combine and should become a decent situational pass rusher.

31. San Francisco 49ers (from Seahawks)
Predicted Pick: HB Dalvin Cook, Florida State
Actual Pick: MLB Reuben Foster, Alabama

A team as starved as talent as the 49ers obviously feels like Foster is worth the trouble here. I cannot blame them. If he can keep his head on straight, he could take over for Navorro Bowman as the leader of this defense. Of course, he could easily end up as another Rolando McClain. Nice first day for new GM John Lynch.

32. New Orleans Saints
Predicted Pick: OLB Zach Cunningham, Vanderbilt
Actual Pick: OT Ryan Ramczyk, Wisconsin

The Saints needed defense but obviously went with the best player available. Ramczyk will be a backup as he rehabs from injury with the chance to take over for Zach Streif in 2018.
