2018 MLB Predictions

Another baseball season is upon us. We have seen an influx of homegrown teams winning championships, from the Royals, to the Cubs, to the Astros. That had a profound effect on the off season, as teams did not see a point to spend big on aging free agents. Of course, almost all of those players still got paid well, but we saw a huge shift towards accepting losing now to win later.

I would estimate about one third of the league is already in tank mode. Look at the White Sox, Rays, Tigers, Royals, Athletics, Marlins, Braves, Reds and Padres.

There has not been a repeat champion since the 2000 Yankees. I just cannot bring myself to pick against the Astros, who have the best blend of speed, power and pitching in baseball. They are built to last, but there are several other strong contenders.

Like my basketball predictions, I ranked starting players and devised a really simple formula (the score after each team’s name) to come up with my predictions. They are not that far off from what I would have picked myself, but it adds a wrinkle and a bit of unknown to boring old predictions.

Enough rambling. On we go!
