A huge growth spurt late in his Florida high school career helped put McClanahan on the radar, and the Mets did use their 26th-round pick on him. He chose to head to the University of South Florida instead, but wasn’t able to make his debut until 2017 after Tommy John surgery knocked out his freshman year. A successful turn as USF’s Saturday starter has scouts excited to see what the southpaw can do in his redshirt sophomore season.
McClanahan has cleaned up his delivery and arm action somewhat since returning, though some see some Chris Sale in his mechanics. There’s plenty of pure stuff to be excited about, starting with a 92-97 mph fastball that he maintains deep into starts. His changeup is his second best pitch and could be at least a 60 in the future. His 82-86 mph slider shows average now, with the chance to develop into a third above-average offering.
Command is the key variable for McClanahan. It comes and goes, as he overthrows his fastball at times. It likely will never be pinpoint, but if he can maintain Major League average control, he’ll be just fine. If teams think he can live up to those Sale comps, he’ll fly off the board in June.
